From: Todd Layfer, Co-Instructional Chair

SGV Members,

Hope your season is going well and you had a chance to enjoy the holidays. Ernesto and I wanted to address a few situations that have occurred this season so that we are all on the same page.

Fashion Police

Teams seem to have gotten the message. We have seen fewer issues on fashion this season. As a refresher:

Undershirts must be a similar color to color of the Jersey. This is most restrictive rule and easy to enforce. If home team has it’s white jersey on then undershirt must be white.

More color options exist for headbands, wristbands, arm sleeves, knee sleeves, compression shorts and tights. Four options exist: Black, White, Beige or predominant color of uniform Jersey. Same color must be worn by all players on same team on these items.

For Medical devices including Patella bands and knee braces are not subject to color restrictions. Simply stated if it’s for medical reasons then no color issues.

Interrupted Dribble

If A1 while dribbling: (a) the ball hits A1’s foot or leg and bounces away but A1 is able to overtake and pick it up; or (b) A1 fumbles the ball in ending the dribble so that A1 must run to recover it.

A1 may recover the ball but may not dribble again. If A1 dribbles again it’s an illegal dribble violation.

If A1 while dribbling and loses control of the dribble and it hits B1’s foot or leg and A1 recovers the ball, A1 can dribble again since the ball was touched by an opponent.

Scoring error at end of the game

The score at the end of the 4th quarter is Arcadia 55 and Poly Pasadena 55. Before the start of overtime, the Poly Pasadena table notifies the officials of a scoring error and that Arcadia had only 54 points in the scorebook.

Since this mistake was discovered prior to start of OT, the game is over and no OT will be played. However, if OT has started, then OT period is played even though there was scoring mistake.

Number of Players Required to Play

Team must start the game with 5 players. Once the game has started a Team can play with less than five players only when there are no eligible players to replace disqualified or injured players.

Behavioral Warning for Head Coach

A courtesy warning..not a Mandatory warning. One warning only and must be recorded in scorebook with the time and period when it was given. After the warning no more warnings and go to a Technical.

Keep in mind you can go right to a technical foul if that is what is warranted!

Technical Fouls on Head Coach

There are two types of Technical fouls that can be assessed on Head Coach.

Direct Technical for the Coaches actions. This results in loss of coaching box (Seatbelt Rule).

Indirect Technical for the actions of the bench. Coach is held responsible for the actions of their bench and when a technical is assessed to anyone on the bench, and indirect is also assessed to the Head Coach. Coaching box is lost. Keep in mind there are no free throws for the indirect nor does it count toward the team foul count.

Example:  Assistant coach is running their mouth and you hit the Assistant with a Technical. You would shoot 2 free throws and it would count toward the team foul count. The indirect on the Head Coach that is associated with the Assistant coach does not result in free throws or count towards team foul count.

Free Throws

Players in marked lane spaces may enter the lane upon release of the FT shot. Players not in the marked lane spaces including the shooter may not enter the lane until ball hits the rim or back board.

Let us know

If you are aware of other situations that occur, please let Ernesto and I know. We use this information to include in our training program for the benefit of all SGV Members!

Have a great season!

Greetings All,

I hope you are enjoying the summer! I would like to thank the members that participated in the Ratings clinic this past weekend, as well as the Board members & observers who assisted. For the first time, we had a crew that broke down video of games and I have received great feedback from the members who benefited from this.

I invite you to sign up for the next Ratings clinic scheduled for Friday, July 12, Saturday, July 13 & Sunday, July 14, 2019. This clinic will have Girl’s Varsity and JV teams participating at Rio Hondo College. Please contact Miguel Gutierrez (323)595-5135 or myself at (626)201-8016 to sign up!

I look forward to seeing you there!
